In Response…

To the survey.  100 of you filled it out (thank you!) and here are the results.

Most readers are women between the ages of 26 and 34, in a relationship, with kids and/or pets.  So, kinda like me.  And you’re all so sweet.  Let me show you:

“You read “real” (does that make sense?) and I like your style. Looking forward to seeing the new life in that great mountain house of yours as you transform it into HOME.”

“I think your very funny and your style and personality seems to match mine very well. Reading about how you guys transformed your old house and how you are improving your new home as well inspires me to do the same with my future home. I can’t wait to incorporate the things I have learned from reading your blog into our future house.”

“I like your style, the fun/easy/cheap art projects which include the kiddos, the built-in & molding projects… I could go on and on. Definitely like that your writing is short, sweet, concise. Some blogs (even though I still love them) can get wordy (and repeat themselves over and over in the same post) and I tend to skip through them fast just to get to the pictures.”

“You have a great mix of projects, tutorials, and personal writing. I like how your husband seems to know a lot of serious constructions stuff, so those tutorials are helpful to me in knowing what someone I hire should be doing :) It’s different from what is on other blogs.”

“You’re relatable, projects are something I’d do but never knew how to get started, you make it clear what is reasonable for a regular diy-er to do and what is best for a pro to be called in for, a lot of the crafty ‘stuff’ you do is way cheaper than buying it and actually looks better”

“Personally more interested in the building and heavy decorating type projects rather than the etsy stuff and the Photoshop designs/handmade art. Sewing/painting projects are interesting as well. Basically, a lot of blogs offer designs, but where you guys stand out is that you have the skills to do some serious construction. A lot of bloggers aren’t trained professionals like Ben, so it sets you ahead of the curve.”

Of course I already knew how great you were, but it’s a good reminder.  Sometimes it is easier to take the negative comments to heart.

We’ve gotten requests for more organizational and living solutions, followed up by building projects.

For the most part, it seems easy to navigate, leave comments, and contact us.  But it’s not as easy to find a project, relate to the projects, and follow tutorials.

I’ve been (trying to) update the blog, including a Projects & Tutorials page with links to all the tutorials we’ve shared.  Just click on the text link to get to the full page.

Of course, if you’re looking for a project, but can’t find it, don’t hesitate to send me an email, Facebook, or comment.  I’m happy to help you find what you’re looking for.  Hopefully updating categories will help, too.

As for tutorials, when I can, I post full, clear, step by step instructions with pictures.  However, I’m hesitant to post a ‘here’s exactly how to do it’ tutorial if it covers something Ben does, which I’m not familiar with.  You see, I don’t want to make everything seem too easy.  The projects we (fine, Ben) tackle aren’t always simple.  Because of that, they might not be safe if you don’t know what you’re doing.  Or if I don’t know what I’m doing/writing/telling you to do.  I’ll try to make building/electrical tutorials more clear, but we can’t be your sole source of information.  If you are uncertain about a project, do research, ask, or hire a professional.  Better to be safe than sorry.

I guess I don’t know how to make projects more relatable  because everyone is different.  So are the situations.

More than a few comments got me thinking, so I’m here to discuss them.  Like this one:

“Seriously, I think you’d have a good blog if you just put in your own personality. I don’t know how I landed at your blog but within weeks I noticed the similarity. Now I just open your post in reader every now and then and honestly just roll my eyes at the similarities, mostly in the structure of your posts.”

I’m sorry you feel that way.  I write the same way I’d speak to you if we met in person.  Similarities will always appear if you’re searching, and a lot of home improvement blog structures are similar because the nature of the content.

And this:

“Think of a way to be different from other bloggers. I will be completely honest and say that when I first started reading your blog I kept getting a vibe that it was a copycat of what the most popular DIY blogs were doing (monthly sponsor post. Superlatives, giveaways, etc.) That turned me off. But after a while, I started to really dig the way you were taking on the huge renovation of the new house.  Be your own captain.  Blog about something differently than others – a new topic, a new contest type, a new avenue for sharing. There has got to be something that’s unique about OHA that no one else could do as well as you.”

I think OHA is different from a lot of other home improvement blogs because we’re willing and able to tackle a range of projects.  Whether I’m sewing, organizing, and crafting.  Or Ben’s building furniture/cabinets, remodeling a kitchen or bath, changing electrical, or installing windows.  Most of the projects we tackle we’re doing ourselves.  Not many people have the skills or know how to do the variety of projects these days.  But, I would like to explore new options, like the Craft Challenge I issued last week.

“I would love more pictures in tutorials – especially craft and sewing tutorials. Pictures of more of the stages. I think you do a great job, but the lighting in your photos isn’t great (sorry to bring it up, I know you work really hard on this blog).  If you look at most DIY/craft blogs, they start with a picture of the supplies all laid out. Just a more polished look on tutorials would be great, and maybe try experimenting with camera settings etc? Katie Bower has some great tutorials on making the most of your camera. I think that excellent sharp photography could really take OHA to the next level, because the projects you tackle are brilliant!”

Looking through old posts, picture quality has definitely improved.  I thought I was doing better, but I’m still learning and getting to know my camera.  If pictures are looking a little dark, feel free to write a helpful comment letting me know.  Oh, and if you want larger pictures just click on it to enlarge.

That’s the run down.  And my random thoughts.  You can still take the survey, if you’d like.  The more info you’re willing to share helps me make this blog better.  Of course you can leave comments here, too.

July Acronym

I know I say this every month, but where has the time gone?  I can’t believe it’s already August.  We’ve got something fun to look forward to and I can’t wait to spill the beans.  Other than that, we’ve got outdoor projects to finish, more to start (and hopefully finish) before the weather cools down.  Although, I can’t lie.  We’re looking forward to fall temperatures.  Steady temps in the upper 90′s and lower 100′s without rain is more than I can handle for this long.  I think my Scandinavian roots are rebelling right now.  But that in no way means I’m ready for winter, so hold off, Mother Nature (please)!

Anyway, enough of my blabbing.  Here’s what we accomplished this July.

Join the festivities:  Free firework prints and a quick Americana table setting.

Unleashed:  A custom pillow tutorial which spurred a new item in the shop, this pretty new address stamp, my new towel buying strategy, quick pillow change for the deck mixing blue and orange, and a new (to me) fabric shop in Minnesota.

Loaded up:  Turning a cheap cardboard box into a pretty storage bin, hanging quirky art in the main bathroom, filling my sister’s stair wall with pictures.

Yet another:  Trip to Ikea, sharing their latest and greatest, Home Goods trip with Jen Jones, and a debate over the placement of something (this time a Sky Tube).

Looking back, we didn’t cross big-ticket items off our to do list.  Why did it feel so busy?  Oh, that’s right.  We’ve been busy hosting gaggles of guests, which is always a treat.  Overall, July has been enjoyable.

How was your July?  Care to share your highlight?  Perhaps you went on a fun vacation?  Finished a project?  Did nothing but relax and read?

Move outs, announcements, and pains:  We officially said good-bye to our first love house.  Share your new address with printable paint chip moving announcements.  While the mountain house is great, we’re feeling moving pains, especially in the closet department.

Adding design and function:  Design elements including a tile shower surround, tile on the floor, new lights, painted black out curtains, and considering decorative trim for the main bathroom.  Functional items include a sleek stainless dishwasher, a whole house fan, wireless fence to keep Jack safe, an open vanity topped by a DIY cut quartz counter top.

Yanking, yelling, yodeling:  Demolishing the old hot tub, chanting for a video tour, yodeling at the top of our mountainous yard.

June has already brought about a few blog changes, too.  Did you notice the new look?

I designed a new header, new background, and we’re officially official.  Finally we ditched the .wordpress.com suffix.

You know I can’t resist a pun, right?  Heck, the name of the blog is a pun on our last name.  Why not do it again?  Bowe is pronounced bow (silent e) as in bow and arrow.  Take a closer look at the background…

Little arrows.  Our Facebook page is different, too.

Having a hard time seeing the details?  Click the pictures to enlarge.

Q and A: Year 2

Happy Memorial Day!  Thank you to all who have protected and served our country.  We’re busy working on a few projects, but I wanted to pop in with a quick post today.  Let’s answer your questions!

Q:  How about your biggest project fail (from the distant past or more recently)?

A:  Hmm, some of my smaller failures include ombre shower curtain, wire Moooi pendant, picking light blue and all pink paint colors, and nearly everything involving a plant.  The biggest failure I can think of is the large basement bedroom at our first house.  From a function stand point, it was great.  The design wasn’t my favorite though.  Obviously design is very personal, but this room didn’t fit in with the rest of the house.  Perhaps if we stayed there longer it would have changed.  I think the reason we don’t have as many large failures is because Ben and I balance each other out in the home improvement realm.  I think pretty and he thinks practical.  Take away one person and it doesn’t work.

Q:  Your favorite project to date?

A: Hands down our first house kitchen remodel.  That whole room was such a labor of love.  Building our own cabinets took a lot of time and effort and the wood counters are divine.  Add white marble to that mix and I’m in love.

Q:  What project you’re most looking forward to at the new house (even if it’s not happening for a while).

A:  Ooh, that’s a good one.  Again, I’m going to say kitchen, despite lacking a solid plan.

Q:  When you want me to come visit. ;) Okay, you don’t have to answer that one. I know you want to come visit me, so I’ll just keep waiting.

A:  Anytime you’re willing to babysit or help paint.  Haha.

Q:  When are you guys gonna quit your jobs and become full-time bloggers?

A:  Ha, I quit my day job six years ago!

Q:  When did you start offering advertising on your website? How many visitors/page views was it when you decided to start offering?

A:  The first month we had more than my blog BFF Jen advertising with us was August 2011, after fifteen months of steady blogging.  At that time, we had about 400 blog subscribers (more through readers) and received just over 50,000 page views that month.  Since then we’ve more than doubled our subscribers and page views.  Our ad rates were only $15 per month, which we’ve recently increased to $20.

That’s all we’ve got.  Do you have another question for us?  We’re always happy to answer.  What did you do over the long weekend?  What are your plans for today?

Blog Anniversary: The Past Year

We’ve come a long way since starting this blog two years ago.  Last year we shared our stats and numbers, and we’re keeping the tradition alive today.

Over the course of a year, we have written 563 posts, still averaging .77 posts per day.

1,043 readers have subscribed to our site, not counting any that may follow along through a reader or by checking in each day.

At the end of May 2010, our first month of blogging, we had 253 total blog views.  So far this May we’ve had 47,323 hits, roughly 187.05 times more views than our first month.

In April 2012, we had 118,831 blog views.  Our highest month, March, had 147,538  blog views.

Jen at IHeart Organizing was the first person to feature one of our projects, my office bookshelves.  We’ve been blog friends ever since.

Thanks to Young House Love’s feature of our kitchen remodel, March 29th had 32,346, the most page views in a single day.

Over the course of the year, we’ve had 937,469 blog views and an all time total of 1,366,142.  So far for 2012, we’ve had 494,515 total views, averaging 3,663 views per day.

We’ve uploaded 2,756 pictures.

We’ve held 50 giveaways, including the current Jillian Rene Decor giveaway, and have plans for more.

Our awesome readers have left us 9,435 comments while WordPress has blocked 75,765 spam comments.  Yowza.

Sun Bursting is the most viewed post after the Home PageOur First House, and About.

2012 has been a busy year for us.  We accidentally found our dream house, made an offer, accepted, and closed on a new house in April, starting the whole process over.  In addition to listing our first home by owner, accepting an offer, and signing closing papers, relinquishing ownership.

We’ve already torn apart a bathroom and have started putting it back together again.  None of this would have happened (well, we still would have worked on our first house and bought the mountain house) without you and your support.  Your comments have made me laugh, smile, and have encouraged and inspired me.  I am grateful to have ‘met’ each of you.  I know I don’t say it enough, but thank you for following along as we work, offering advice, and leaving amazingly kind comments.

That’s how our blog has grown over the past two years.  Now we’re keeping another tradition alive.  A Q and A post, so feel free to ask your questions in the comment section and we’ll write a round up post next week.  Oh, and I’m trying to find a time to shoot a house tour video. Hopefully we’ll have something soon!
