When we set up our Christmas tree, we moved our La-Z-Boy rocking chair to the basement. With the holidays behind us, we took the chance to bring in a chair substitute. We have a club chair that matches our couch, so we brought that up from the basement instead.
I love the new and FREE look. First, because the chair matches the couch. Secondly, because this chair has a considerably lower back, making the living room feel more open. Wondering where that pillow came from? I made it. Find the tutorial here.
Remember this?
Compared to this?
Much better, no? The painted white frames help out, too. Have you shopped around your house to change up the decor?
P.S. Design Mom, Gabrielle Blair has featured our Mr. and Mrs. mugs and our Family Tree Cut Out artwork today! Talk about exciting!

Good move – it looks much better – I think because the chair’s lines match the lines of the couch now.
I like the new chair definitely, however the placement seems a tad awkward. Do you have a picture of the whole room layout?
It is a little awkwardly placed, unfortunately, there really isn’t a better spot for it. You can see a few more shots in The Grand Tour to get a feel for the layout. It faces the entertainment center, but the slipper chairs are across the room with the sofa perpendicular to those, parallel to the entertainment center. Any suggestions are welcome, though!
Thanks!
A
Where did the graphic pillows on the couch come from? Did you make them too?
Hi Jen,
I did make those pillow covers using an outdoor fabric I found at Hancock Fabrics last summer. I know there are very similar designs online, just google Cat’s Cradle Fabric and you should find something.
Hope it helps!

How much seating do you already have? Have you considered just not having a chair in that spot?
I’ve learned, simply because we have the tiniest house ever (under 900 sq feet), that we can have one couch and one chair. It’s not much seating, but we also have the kitchen/dining table chairs for when we have company.
But, if you need the seating, function over form should always win, as you have to live in a house, not just look at it.
It IS a GREAT looking chair 🙂
Hi Wilma,
We have a couch that seats 3 to 4 people and two other chairs, but Ben has a large family so we do tend to need the seating. We did leave it chairless for a few days after taking down the Chrsitmas tree, but I like the seating. Oh well.
Thanks for the suggestions and kind words!

What about losing the sidetable next to the couch, moving it against that wall, and placing the second chair straight across from the existing one (i.e not angled)? OR drop the second chair (as a pp mentioned) and bring it out when company comes over?
We had an awkward layout in our living room as well and that is what we ended up doing (two chairs across from each other)

Realistically, no one will use that chair to watch tv on a regular basis (or is that your hubby’s favourite chair to watch tv in?)…
Anyways it is hard to tell from th e pics so I”m not sure if my suggestions work!
The room is looking pretty great though!
I definitely like the club chair over the lazy boy!!
And congrats on the feature: so exciting! (and you deserve it!)
The new chair is a huge improvement! Love your wall color too. Fun blog to read new reader. 🙂
I just found your site- your house looks great! I have just recently joined the DIY craze a bit more and start blogging about it too. Feel free to stop by- but don’t expect great results like you have 🙂 Just getting started. But I will never match all of your woodwork- absolutely beautiful!

Love the new chair! I’d definitely rotate it 90 degrees though so it’s facing into the room. Someone sitting in it currently has their back to the couch! Until you come up with the magic layout that fixes all your problems (and if you can do that sort of thing, you can come to my house next!), it would at least make it a tad less awkward. 🙂
Love the pillow Amanda! And how fun to have furniture in your basement to swap out when you want to!!
I agree with Lindsay above, definitely rotate it 90 degrees! Seems like it would be way less awkward. But I like the matching chair!
Yikes. I agree with the all the other posters….that chair is less ugly than the other but it’s placement is REALLY awkward!!!! Looks out of place just sitting in the walkway and facing the wrong direction. Don’t really think that one is one to show off/blog about….
Hi Mel,
It might seem awkward in photos, but in person, it makes more sense. It faces the tv right now. I did try it turned toward the two slipper chairs, but because it’s deeper than it is wide, it stuck out into the walkway more than this direction. Sorry you don’t like the post.
