The Lay(out) of the Land

As you know by now, we’re about half way through the completion of our laundry room.  We’ve already sheet rocked our walls, installed a pin wheel pattern tile floor, and installed our new washer and dryer.  We have plans to build custom cabinetry, so I thought I’d share our {floor}plan with you.

{Not to scale}

We’ll have base cabinets with a countertop for a nice work surface.  Above, we’ll have upper cabinets with under cabinet task lighting, too.  We love crisp white cabinetry, so we’ll paint it white.  The cabinets will house all of Ben’s reloading equipment and supplies as well as our small tools (we have a lot), extra paint, and laundry supplies.  It will be fantastic to finally have a place, other than the floor, to store our tools and paint.  Of course, we’ll keep you posted on the progress, too.

For now, I’m on the hunt for decorative storage for laundry necessities.  Any creative containers used in your laundry area?  What are your favorite decorative storage containers?  Lidded apothecary jars?  Clear storage bins?  Wooden boxes?  Open shelving systems?Any storage you’re coveting?

  1. Sure like your plans for storage. Right now I am happy to have a small book shelf with a curtain stapled to the front to cover the laundry supplies. I hung a long curtain in front of the stacking washer/dryer and my ‘roomscape’ improved immediately. Washer/dryer is in my bedroom (former small closet). Saved me years of walking up and down the stairs, so I am thankful for the placement even though it is weird.

  2. Isn’t it funny how much fun a laundry room can be? I never thought the day would come for me to think laundry was fun, but we’re excited to have a laundry nook ourselves in our new house. Right now, it’s in the basement, and our bedroom is 3 floors up in the attic (we rent)! Needless to say, my towels don’t get washed as frequently as they should. 🙂

    I like how glass jars look for laundry storage! Wooden boxes sound nice, too.

    1. Hi Laura,

      I have that on my to do list. We did install it ourselves, (the only things we haven’t done ourselves is drill a well and cut the concrete for the egress windows) but when Ben talked to people about ordering and installing it, they all looked at hime like he was crazy to attepmt it himself. I know it’s not a project every DIYer can do themselves, but we love the system and it’s totally worth the price. I’ll share sometime soon!

      Thanks!

  3. Hi Amanda!

    If you put the stacked washer dryer on the left hand wall next to the pressure tank, wouldn’t that give you a whole run of cabinets and countertop? Just wondering why there’s such a big gap up there. Unless there’s a door I haven’t remembered.

    1. Hi Hayley,

      That’s a good question! There are actually a few reasons we didn’t/couldn’t do that. You can’t really see in this photo because the junk on top, but there are pipes for the geothermal that run along the floor and it would be a pain to move them around. Also, this area is behind the door swing and it’s under three feet from the wall, so our washer and dryer wouldn’t fit behind our curtain, so you would still see the ugly utility stuff, which we’re not keen on. We also have to leave space for our steam generator once we finally get that shower area done. And, my drawing is not to scale, so there really isn’t that much space over there. We’re just happy to have any counter/storage space in the laundry room, but we might try to figure out something to utilize that space.

      Thanks for your question!
      Amanda
