It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

That’s right, folks.  I know it’s not December yet, but Christmas is right around the corner.  Have you started decorating?  I think most people decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, and usually I do, too.  But, this year, we’re running around like crazy people the week before, so I decided to decorate a few weeks ago.  Yep, you read that right, weeks.  What was the first Christmas thing to go up?  The tree, of course!

This year’s color palette is silver, white, blue and green.  Not very original, I know, but I bought ornaments at Target (love Target!) the day after Christmas last year.  So, I’m working with what I’ve got.  Every year, it’s Ben’s task to add the lights to the tree.  We both prefer the plain white strands for a classic look.  So, he lights the tree and I add the ornaments.  This year, I had a little help from Vincent.  Of course, most decorations are at the bottom two feet, but hey, it’s free help.

A white dove is perched atop our tree this year.

I have my eye on a beautiful Capiz star topper from, where else, Target.  It’s currently priced at $20.  Not bad, but it will be much better when it’s 50% off, dontcha think?  Yeah, me too.  What else is on my Christmas tree wish list?  A cute tree skirt of some sort.

You see, we don’t have anything covering that ugly tree stand right now.  I want something white or silver, but I haven’t seen anything I really like yet.  I think I’ll buy some fabric and make a tree skirt at some point.

So, that’s what our Christmas tree looks like this year.  What about your tree?  Have you set it up yet?  Do you have a color scheme or theme you’re sticking to or do you prefer to decorate with all of those mismatched, collected-over-time ornaments?

  1. We are in the middle of moving from one state to another. We are in a dinky little condo and only could take what we needed since it was already furnished. So most of our stuff is still back at our house that is currently under contract but we won’t be in a new home until January. So yesterday my 3 yr old and I went out and bought a little 4 ft tree and a pkg of ornaments from Target $5. I let him pick the pkg and one special ornament. He, of course, picked a blue and purple T-rex. At least the pkg of ornaments match the t-rex colors. They are brightly colored – purple, pink, green, and blue. He is quite excited about it, so that makes me happy. I’m also making “jesse tree” ornaments to go on it for advent.

  2. I love your tree! I do a red, white and silver tree every year. I am normally not a Wal-mart shopper – but they always have the best ornaments!

  3. What about a couple of those faux sheep skins from IKEA for a tree skirt. I just put my tree up today, and lights are on. Will probably decorate it tomorrow, after I go get a couple of faux sheep skins from IKEA. 🙂

  4. I have a wondeful idea for you…We used one of those silver metal washtubs and just sat the stand right in it. It gives it the look of a potted tree without having to fix a skirt over and over because of it moving around. This is the second year we have done this and it looks awesome!!! We love it! It also works great when putting gifts around it, much neater!!!

  5. I go for a different colour scheme each year, not very sentimental of me, I know. I only have a set of branches in a vase as my “tree” though, so it only requires a handful of new ornaments. This year I’ve gone all rustic red, kraft and white as a change from my normal glitzy decorations.

I second the other reader’s suggestion about the sheepskin skirt. I have seen it elsewhere and it looked magical (it would look stupid where I live though – no snow!).

    1. Thanks for the suggestions! If we had an IKEA nearby, I would buy a few sheepskins, but that’s not really an option right now. Stupid Big Sky state lacking cheap Swedish goods.

  6. Last year we were looking for a cheap tree skirt solution….so we went to our local fabric store and bought a couple yards of tulle (like what a bride’s veil is made from) & just casually wrapped it around the base of our tree. It kinda looks like a poufy cloud! Love it!
Where did you get that bird’s nest ornament? So cute!
