Demo More

Squeeee!  It has begun.  Master bathroom reno.  It’s on like Donkey Kong.  Our shower pan finally came in, so we can start tearing into this project.  What looked like this on Friday:

Master Bathroom Macinack Island Green

Looks like this now:

Which is super exciting.  Even though we’re down one bathroom, this is a good thing, Martha.  Our once super closed off shower:

Was carefully torn apart to not damage the plumbing and electrical in the wall.

Ben had fun taking the sledge-hammer to the old tile.

I didn’t get pictures of the shower base, but let me tell you, it was gross.  Even with a liner, the poured concrete and tile base leaked.  This is the second layer of plywood below the shower.

Which is exactly the reason we waited for our custom stainless steel shower pan.  One piece means far fewer places to leak.  Exactly the reason we waited for our custom stainless steel shower base.

In about five hours, Ben took out the shower, mirror, toilet, and vanity.

The floor, however, wasn’t as quick.  Tiles came up, but the OSB underlayment was a bear.  Think tiny pieces.

And we discovered something unexpected.  What we just tore out, was a remodel!  There’s capped off sink plumbing and an outlet behind the shower walls.

Plumbing came through the floor to feed the sinks, too, so we’re not sure where exactly the tub or shower was before.

We, okay, okay, Ben will have his work cut out for him.  Plumbing and electrical to deal with before things will start looking better.

But, this is exciting.  So is the stack of tile, lights, and supplies in the garage.  Have you started a winter project?  Or a bathroom remodel?

Tubs, Tile, and Inspiration

I’m seriously chomping at the figurative bit to get started on our bathroom remodel.  Hopefully we’ll finalize measurements soon and start ordering and building.  Eek, I’m so excited.  Want to see what we’re thinking?

The claw foot tub that we pulled out of the main bathroom will go our master.  We need to refinish it, and I’m thinking a charcoal gray exterior with gold feet, like this:

Or going all charcoal on the outside, feet included, like this:

Either way I think it will be fantastic.  And we’re probably going to use the brass plumbing the tub already has, too.

For the vanity, we want to include warm, dark wood, probably as a countertop.  A sleek round mirror and brass hardware accents, like this will tie in the brass tub plumbing.

A semi recessed vessel sink like this one would be perfect with a faucet similar to the photo above.

On the floors, we’re going to the dark side with gray slate (same stuff we used on the fireplace) set in a brick pattern, like this:

But in the shower, we want light and bright.  What’s better than white marble?  Well, white marble set in a herringbone pattern of course!  Similar to this, but a smaller tile:

And a barn door to allow space for the tub.

If we left the door as it currently is, it would bump into the proposed tub spot.  So here’s the proposed floor plan, with a single sink, free-standing tub, and an open shower.

I’m ready to get this party started.  By party, I mean demo.  Of course more details to come as we make progress.

A huge thank you for all the kind, encouraging words and support on Monday, too!  You all are wonderful.

Busted Bathroom

Let’s talk about our master bathroom, shall we?  What to say about this space.  Well, it’s dated.  The 70’s called, it wants our bathroom back.  Orangey oak cabinets aren’t the worst offenders, but they’re not doing anything to help, either.  And because of the sink placement, only one top drawer opens.

But the cabinets aren’t the real problem.  Oh no, the tile is.  Not only in the looks department, but the shape they’re in.  At the base of the shower, the tiles are separating from the wall.

Which means…water leakage.  We all know that’s a bad situation.  Of course we could fix just the problem areas, but where’s the fun in that?  I mean, the whole bathroom needs an update.  Super hot weather means we’re better off working indoors.  So, tackling the master bathroom has been bumped up our to do list.  Shower, get ready for a makeover.

Walls, prepare for a facelift.

And vanity mirror, you’ve gotta go.  And finally we’ll get some paint around the light fixture.

Master-Bath-Vanity

Most exciting to me is adding the old clawfoot tub from the main bathroom below the window.

Master-Bath-Window-and-Vanity

To accommodate the tub, we’ll shorten the vanity to one sink (two is unnecessary for us).  And convert the swinging door to a pocket door.

Master-Bath-Door

We’re still in the early planning stages, but we’re discussing changing the layout of the shower.  In my ideal world, we’d make this a full glass wall:

Master-Bath-Shower-End

But it’s not realistic; where would we put our switches?  And I’ve heard full glass showers are a pain in the arse to clean.  Not to mention, spendy.  We’re excitedly discussing plans and looking for materials.

What prompts you to start a remodel?  Damage that needs fixing?  Just sick of using/looking at a space?  If you could choose one feature for your bathroom, what would it be?  I’m most excited for a separate tub and shower.  Especially because that tub is a clawfoot.

And to all US residents, Happy Independence Day!  Hope you enjoy your long weekend!

On Procrastination

Several months ago, I was offered a chance to review Dutch Boy paint.  Not having a local retailer, I had never tried Dutch Boy, so I was curious to see what I thought about it.  I picked out a pale green, Mackinac Island, to paint over the cranberry red walls.

I just couldn’t take it any longer.  Happily, the green is a soothing, pale color.  And the paint covered the red in two coats, without primer or any special treatment.

Master Bathroom Macinack Island Green

Being in a confined space, I really appreciated zero VOC, low odor paint.

However, I’m not thrilled with the green wall/orange-y oak trim combo.  Of course, that’s not the paint’s fault, just an ugly combo akin to putting lipstick on a pig.  Eventually we’ll remodel this bathroom including refinishing the clawfoot tub we pulled out of the main bathroom, shortening the vanity to one sink (to make room for the tub under the window), installing new tile, and new paint.  So this is a temporary fix to cover up the blood-red walls.

Master Bathroom Macinack Island Green Window

And here’s the procrastination part.  The light fixture in there is ornate and detailed.  Too detailed for me to care to cut in around.  I figured Ben could take the light down for me to paint behind, then put it back up.  Well, we still haven’t done that.  So here’s how it has looked for the past few months.

Master Bathroom Macinack Island Green Light

Ooooh, aaahhh.  Can’t wait to tackle the bathroom for a brighter, cleaner, less 70’s look.

P.S.  We were not compensated for this post, but the paint was free in exchange for a review.  All opinions are 100% mine.

Move In Ready

On Friday, I mentioned we moved in to the mountain house, as Ben calls it.  I think a moment like that deserves a celebration of pictures.  So, here’s the mountain house, filled with our crap, I mean furniture.

The entry isn’t huge, but we have a rug and storage bench for putting on shoes.

Our old sectional, which lived in the theater room at the first house, fits in the new living room with plenty of space.

We arranged the furniture to face the television about 2 1/2 feet from the window wall.  I have high hopes for bookshelves on either side of the window and a window seat between.

Small end tables and a bookshelf turned entertainment center work for now.

Ben built that bookshelf for V’s nursery and we’ve had it in the basement for the past few years.  It is the only piece of furniture that can serve this purpose until we get a chance to build a proper entertainment center.  This also means Ben’s kick butt surround sound system is tucked away for the too small shelf.  Once we finish the bathroom, we’ve got this on our to do list.

Okay, enough of my whining.  Here’s our empty dining room.  The stool and lantern are for the deck and the chairs are there as additional seating.

Some day we’ll buy or build a large table to go in here, but that’s not a priority.  Right around the corner is my office.  I’ve got my craft and shop supplies in the lower cabinets and lots of electronics on the desk top, but it’s totally functional.

Jack has deemed this her spot, so I tossed a few towels down to keep her cozy until I can make her a little dog bed.

Then there’s the kitchen.  Oh, the kitchen.  Even though this kitchen is at least twice the size of our other kitchen, we’re quickly learning the main cabinets are poorly laid out.  Not as much storage as it appears to have.

So we’ve been stashing most kitchen stuff in the giant pantries.

That pretty French door fridge above?  I hate it.  Ben packed up all the food from the fridge and freezer at the first house on Friday.  The fridge contents fit without a problem.  However, the two drawer freezer couldn’t hold an entire box of frozen foods.  As I tried to cram everything in, getting more and more frustrated while cursing the LG designer I started crying out of annoyance.  The stress from packing while watching two little boys and unpacking had gotten the best of me.  Luckily, we have space in the utility room for a chest freezer, so Ben bought one yesterday.  Rant over.  Check out the breakfast nook we’re using as the dining room.

That large window is a great place to watch the wild life in the back yard.

Friday night we had five deer visitors, right off the back patio.

It was chilly over the weekend, so Ben built a fire and we roasted marshmallows right in the family room.

Figuring out a layout for this room was tricky.  We have several traffic patterns; one from the stairs, another from the hall, and a third to the sliding door.  This works best, keeping everything centered on the fireplace and windows.  Too bad we don’t have close enough outlets to plug-in the lamps.

I’ve moved my books from the old office into the guest bedroom.  The pile on the bed is my sewing machine and 20 yards of fabric for curtains.

We’re still working on the main bathroom, so we’ll share pictures soon.  Floor tile has been delayed and should be here tomorrow.  The boys’ bedroom layout is very similar to their old room, just a few feet wider.  Here’s V’s side, complete with a dresser due to the lack of organization systems in this house.

E’s side is so bare right now, but he does have a faux Jack to keep him company.

The last bedroom, our bedroom.  We sold our bed to the buyer and we’re using the old guest bed for a while.  Ben hates the headboard covering the window.

I finished painting the closet over the weekend and put our clothes away.  Instead of a pile of clothes, we’ve got a stack of empty bins.  Wahoo!

Ugly master bathroom with an awesome steam shower.  Still ugly despite a few accessories.  I guess putting lipstick on a pig doesn’t make it pretty.

You want to see something that really isn’t pretty (and kind of stresses me out)?  The basement.

It’s funny because we’ve gained square footage over the last house, but we’re desperately lacking built-in storage.  Not to mention we’ve lost two bedrooms (hence the mattresses) and practically two bathrooms.  The main bath is under construction and the basement bath is just gross, leaving us with the master bath.  Eventually we’ll get there, but I think the basement will look like this for a while.

Ben and Handy Sammy hauled over the washer and dryer, too.  The plug for the dryer isn’t the same as the outlet though.

So that’s how we’re living in the new house.  I’ve off to pack up the few remaining things at the old house and then I’ve got some sewing to do.  Mama needs black out curtains in hopes of getting the boys to sleep past 6:30.

What did you do over the weekend?  Do you have a sewing project in your near future?  How about a move?
